Make sure you sign the Petition

Larry Baldock and Sheryl Savill have launched their Petition for a CIR (Citizens Initiated Referendum) on two questions concerning the criminalisation of smacking as part of good parental correction, and the need for the Government to give urgent priority to understanding and addressing the real causes of child abuse in NZ.

  • Good Parents Made Criminals Sometime This Year?

Domestic discipline-“Every parent of a child…is justified in using force by way of correction towards the child, if the force used is reasonable in the circumstances.” Section 59 of the Crimes Act.The Select Committee’s proposed substitution amendment of Section 59 will effectively repeal all parental authority and make all parents criminals by definition, whether they are prosecuted or not.

The aim of this substitution amendment is to remove from parents the legal right to use ‘reasonable force’ to correct their children. Any force used to correct children will, after amendment, fall under the law regarding assault. Assault is a criminal activity. As children cannot be corrected without the use of ‘force’ of some sort, any parent who corrects their child will commit a criminal act by doing so and thus by definition be a criminal.

Sue Bradford does not need another bill to criminalise parents. The Committee’s proposed amendment does that for her. Nor is her claim she does not intend to criminalise parents, credible. The explanatory notes to her bill show that that is precisely her intention. Nor is her claim that police won’t prosecute all parents – as though prosecuting some parents is a matter of no consequence! It is not the prosecution of a person that makes them a criminal, but the person’s committing of criminal acts. Bradford intends to make correcting children a criminal activity, and thus all parents criminals.

Are Parliamentarians so out of touch with reality that they want to turn all parents into criminals? Surely not! However, unbelievable as it may sound, about half of them are!

This DVD-1 is a “must see” for a thorough education on the whole “smacking”
    debate.

When we sat and watched the DVD with some friends who weren’t fully informed
on the issue, they were really shocked about it because they didn’t realize
the repercussions of Sue Bradford’s Bill to repeal Section 59 !

The impressive introduction by Renton, outlining the pro-repeal groups’
attacks on Craig Smith and traditional corporal correction, opened their
eyes to the very nasty tactics of the “other side”, and made them want to
    hear and learn more!

Our friends were further enlightened about the debacle when they listened to
Craig’s discerning and well-studied look at Section 59, the words “force”
and “assault”, the U.N. involvement, the abortion myth and juggernaut,
and his exploration of the disastrous implications for parents, should
    Section 59 be repealed.

When Craig scrupulously interviews the Swedish lawyer, Ruby
Harrold-Claesson, she expertly and knowledgeably relates the facts of the
deteriorating and disastrous consequences taking place for families in
Sweden today because of the laws against corporal correction there. After
this last, thought-provoking interview in the DVD’s trilogy of reports, one
cannot help but be convicted of the urgent need to stand against the treason
intended towards the Biblically traditional role of parental authority and
    discipline here in New Zealand.

We urge everyone who cares about their children, grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, etc., to watch the DVD and help spread the real truth about the
intended repeal of S. 59, before the time is gone to help retain it in our
    law.

  • Still much to do

There is still much more that we want to do to keep the momentum going between now and 2 May, when the Bill might next come before Parliament for its second reading. As we seek to keep up the pressure in our fight against the Crimes Amendment Bill, your prayers, financial contributions and moral support will continue to be most welcome. This bill to repeal Section 59 of the Crimes Act puts parental authority at stake!

Repeal of Section 59 will cause all parents, grandparents and caregivers
to become criminals by definition, whether they are ever charged or not,
should they use any force whatsoever to correct, train or discipline
    children.

Both Police Commissioner Robinson and Police Commissioner Broad have
confirmed in writing [see attachment] that should Section 59 ever go,
parents would no longer be authorised to use reasonable force by way of
correction. Traditional parenting activity would join robbery and
speeding as criminal activity whether one is caught, charged or not.
Every parent, grandparent and caregiver in the land who used any force,
however light, or even the threat of force would automatically fall foul
of the definition of assault in Section 2 of the Crimes Act and be
constantly exposed to a charge of criminal assault under Section 194(a)
of the Crimes Act, worth as much as two years in jail.

Despite Bradford’s disingenuous protests that this is not her intention,
it is precisely what she outlines in the Bill’s Explanatory Note. She
even says common law precedent should not be called upon to justify
parental use of such force: it must always be regarded as outside the
    protection of the law.

Bradford’s Bill has from the beginning stated her desire to reduce all
parental authority to near zero. It does nothing to reduce violence; it
will instead reduce overall discipline and that will increase violence
across the board. This Bill must be decisively dumped.
